A parcel-gilt silver and enamel Sugar Bowl and Cream Jug.


An exceptional  Victorian frosted parcel-gilt silver Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl, with Tongs, by Frederick Elkington and Company, Birmingham 1883, the sides of each piece applied with enamel scenes. The whole within an Elkington retailer’s case covered with crushed red velvet imprinted with a crocodile skin pattern.

Only one of the finely painted enamel scenes has been identified – that of Alnwick Castle and Bridge. Another such jug and bowl, albeit of lesser quality, was offered at auction by Sotheby’s London [26th May 2021].

Very good with a small chip in the glaze of one enamel panel.


The Jug: height –  7.8 cm.; width – 7.4 cm.; depth – 6.8 cm.

The Bowl : height – 6.1 cm.; width – 11.5 cm.;  depth – 7.5 cm.

Weight of the Jug and Bowl, excluding the case: 238.70 gms.
