A George III small-sized silver baluster Mug.
George III small-sized silver baluster Mug, struck with a maker’s mark only, ‘IB’ over ‘WB’, London circa 1765. The base is additionally struck with several star-shaped marks. This partnership of makers, recorded as ‘Grimwade 3626’, was noted by him on several fully-marked pieces dating between 1764 and 1766, but the identity of the two remains unknown. The foot of the mug is cast and turned underneath, as is the underside of the body. The front of the mug is engraved with the original owner’s crest, a martlet.
