A George II silver-gilt Ciborium by Frederick Kandler.
£4,250.00
A rare George II silver-gilt Ciborium, London 1743, by Frederick Kandler. The ciborium is marked on the foot and the lid but the cup and stem, which are screwed into the base [presumably for travelling], are unmarked.
This ciborium is one of only three known by Kandler: another, smaller, example of circa 1745 is struck with a maker’s mark only, has an unmarked cover, and appeared at auction in Christie’s London on 18/05/1981, lot 114; and the third example, again of small size, is fully marked for 1732 and remains with the family for which it was made.
Provenance: offered at auction Sothebys London, 14/06/1984, lot 238.
